儿童美术展览会开幕了。突然来了一辆黑色轿车，里面钻出两个造型奇特的漫画人物——“帽子”和“棍子” 大人。顾名思义，这两位是整人能手 。果然，他们踏进展览厅，一看陈列的作品极为恼火，立即大肆糟踏，有的被打上“×”，有的踢倒在地，有的翻了个身……展览厅内的作品都遭到“帽子”和“棍子”两位大人的猛烈攻击，无一幸免。于是，他们把展览会给封了，不准参观。随后，两位大人马上用电话向上级报告了他们的战果。夜深人静，展览厅里忽然热闹起来。画中的人物和动物都活动起来了，他们自己动手，利用各自的特长 ，把展览厅里的全部画稿修复一新。 这时，有一个画中的坏蛋趁大家不注意时，偷偷溜出展厅，到办公室向两位大人告密。当“帽子”和“棍子” 闻讯再次赶到展览厅时感到非常诧异 ，因为画幅中的每个人物早已有所准备，他们与“帽子”和“棍子”进行了激烈的战斗...。The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely.
