公元1436年春末，明朝宣德十年皇帝宠幸的赵贵妃染病逝世，宣宗皇帝整日郁郁寡欢，无心问津朝政。亲信大臣们商议由后宫太监韩志彤全权负责去李妃家乡江南甄选几名秀女进宫进献给皇上，希望皇上心情能变好。 于是一场别开生面的选秀活动在江南拉开了帷幕，同时也唱响了一曲震撼人心的悲歌。。The story begins in today Istanbul, when a woman called Işık (Bade İşçil) arrives at an old house.
