1938年，流落于上海街头的失忆青年小夏，因无意中救助了唐家长子唐汉青，被唐家老爷收为关门弟子，学习雕刻红木技艺。时值日军侵占上海，目睹日军暴行的小夏，逐渐恢复了记忆，他想起在南京大屠杀中自己全家遭日军满门杀绝的惨痛经历，便开始了复仇之路。杀敌报仇后，小夏归隐山林。不料恩人唐家因此遭难，小夏义无反顾出山解救。随后在爱国学生唐家小女儿唐汉彩等人的影响下，逐渐认识到国不存家何在的道理。最终，小夏从一个个人复仇者，成长为在共产党引领下，为民族大义而战的抗日英雄。。MOTHER TONGUE (母语) is a portrait of a Chinese American family in which the consequences of a mother’s decision to leave her young daughter in the care of a white American “homestay” family are slowly unearthed over the course of a family dinner.
