柳叶嫂的丈夫大牛在洪水中救了多人，体力不支被困在一棵树上，一艘满载灾民的船从此经过，但再要搭人就会有危险，河木桩在船上忍心撇下大牛，大牛终于命丧洪水。后来河木桩获救，被安排在柳叶嫂家，当他得知大牛的事后，悔恨自己的贪生之举，竭力想补偿柳叶嫂一家。他的真诚感动了柳叶嫂和她瞎眼的婆婆和孩子，化解了怨恨，柳叶嫂不愿河木桩内疚一辈子，让他离开，河木桩带着希冀回家了。。Speedy" loses his job as a soda-jerk, then spends the day with his girl at Coney Island. He then becomes a cab driver and delivers Babe Ruth to Yankee Stadium, where he stays to see the game. When the railroad tries to run the last horse-drawn trolley (operated by his girl's grandfather) out of business, "Speedy" organizes the neighborhood oldtimers to thwart their scheme.。
